What is Indus Water Treaty Between Pakistan and India?
According to the agreement, India has to release or allow the flow of 80% of Indus River water to Pakistan. According to Express Tribune, India's rights are very limited, and they cannot stop the flow of water from the Indus River to Pakistan, as it is not sustainable, and practically it is not possible either for India. Yes, they can limit the flow via various hydro projects developed to divert the flow of Indus River water; however, stopping it totally is not in their control.
Many experts, like Dawar, who is an expert on climate change, suggest that India has been practicing stopping the flow of the Indus River to Pakistan, and they are using it for themselves and their various hydro projects; however, totally stopping it is not in their control, and it requires a decade or so, possibly, to stop it if they are able to build dams near it. Moreover, the agreement between Pakistan and India suggests that both of these countries cannot avoid the contract or its terms, no matter what the conditions or circumstances are. If India is really breaching a contract that mentions it cannot be void and the guarantor is the World Bank, then Pakistan will have all the right to respond to any illegal move by India, whether it is physical, tactical, or diplomatic.
Moreover, 80% of the Indus River belongs to Pakistan, and India is allowed to get 20% according to the agreement between Pakistan and India. Moreover, if India violates its commitment and promise, then Pakistan also has the right to respond. The treaty took shape in 1960 between India and Pakistan.
