PECA Law to Combat Hate Speech and Fake News Online
Today the government passed the PECA law in the Senate, and days before, it was already passed in NA. Now both houses have passed the bill, and it will be sent to the president to sign, and once it is signed, then it will become a law after notification.
PECA law will help the government to control abuse, extreme hate speech, and immoral acts on social media. It will help the government to track down people who use immoral language, fake images for their purposes, fake news, and hateful content against the government, sensitive institution personnel, or judges. It will allow the government to tackle social media, fake news and hateful content.
DRAP (Digital Rights Authority Protection) will be formed; it will monitor social media content, and it will have the authority to block the site, remove the post, or ban the user. The affected person has to register within 24 hours with the content to DRAP, and it will investigate and take action.
Moreover, any kind of fake news offender can face a fine of up to 20 million and even a sentence of up to 3 years if they are found guilty.
Additionally, the FIA's cybercrime wing will be dismantled, and DRAP will handle and investigate the matters.
